The main pharmaceutical policy goals in Ghana are access to essential medicines for everybody, quality assurance for all drugs on the market, a functioning and efficient supply chain as well as rational use of medicines by professionals and patients. There is also a commitment to strengthen the domestic pharmaceutical industry, outlined under the health industry in national health policy. Ghana's pharmaceutical market is ~ US$ 610mn with an annual growth rate of ~5.3%. Ghana is the most attractive pharmaceutical market in West Africa, where the National Health Insurance Scheme provides basic Healthcare to most population and the local pharmaceutical industry gets government support.
Domestic drug makers are moving towards achieving WHO qualification and GMP certification, supported by the government’s policies.
Ghana’s evolving demographic and epidemiological profile will provide increased revenue-earning opportunities for pharmaceutical companies, particularly those producing non-communicable disease treatments.
Local drug makers are in a favorable position to enter joint ventures with foreign pharmaceutical firms, particularly as regional exports are becoming more important.
Partnerships between foreign multinationals and the local government, aim to upgrade existing infrastructure.
SCG Healthcare Pvt. Ltd did not showcase pharmaceutical products in WAPHC because of its focus on the Spandan portable ECG device, which was the reason SCG Healthcare had maximum footfall and interest on the stall. Most visitors have shown their interest in the Spanadan Portable ECG device and were keen for tie-ups on pharmaceutical products from SCG.
